Background

On October 8, 2023, the 19th Asian Games came to a successful conclusion in Hangzhou, China. Caltta Technologies, a leading provider of integrated professional PMR communications solutions, in collaboration with China Mobile, the largest Mobile Network Operator (MNO) in the world, played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of this mega event.

The Hangzhou Asian Games witnessed a remarkable achievement, with a total of 482 gold medals awarded, and an impressive tally of 15 world records, 37 Asian records, and 170 Asian Games records broken. As a crucial supplier of private communication infrastructure, Caltta delivered a seamless communication network, high-quality devices, and technical expertise to guarantee the event's success.

Challenges

To prepare for the highest-level comprehensive sports event in Asia, the organizer of Hangzhou Asian Games and local authorities in the host city must plan and establish a dedicated communication network for intensive usage before and during the event. However, it's not without challenges.

1) Coverage: The competition venues of the Asian Games, which varied greatly in terms of scale and architecture, were distributed widely across Hangzhou city and its neighboring cities; it required not only wide geographic coverage but also onsite and indoor coverage of stadiums.

2) Device: To meet the communication needs of personnel with different tasks from different organizations, the organizer and local authority were supposed to supply devices of different forms and protocols for specific purposes, for example, water surface events.

3) Complexity: Preparations for the private communications of the Asian Games started in March and required the integration of many sub-systems.

Solution

Fully aware of the above-mentioned challenges, Caltta conducted in-depth technical interviews and onsite surveys before the system planning.

DMR digital trunking system for reliable group communications at each venue

Caltta's team evaluated the wide distribution of competition venues and investigated the characteristics of each venue; they proposed to set up a DMR system for each of the 54 competition venues. Caltta deployed base stations with different carrier frequencies based on the needs of different venues. The single-site system was simpler and could be deployed according to the scale and structure of venues. It was flexible and convenient to serve events at the 54 venues.

More than 3,000 digital radios distributed to the staff

To meet the needs of different scenarios, Caltta offered the flagship model PH790 DMR portable radio. PH790 has a stable signal, simple and practical design, compact and light body, and long battery life. It is equipped with a 2-inch semi-transparent screen and a full digital keypad, which is convenient for operation. With IP68 protection and MIL-STD-810H standards, it works properly in most harsh environments, achieving accurate transmission and rapid response upon important information, and meets the specific needs of the Asian Games Organizing Committee.

Caltta team provides 24/7 technical support

Caltta organized a professional technical support team since the end of March when test events started. From the full series of official competitions to the torch relay, the opening and closing ceremonies, and other important events, the support team was always on standby to make sure the communication system operated flawlessly.
